Gardening TEK-

Investigating the different organisms that would make up our gardening ecosystem(How will they interact with one another? Which are producers, consumers?)

TEK-

SCIENCE 5.10.A.-The student is expected to compare the structures and functions of different species that help them live and survive such as hooves on prairie animals or webbed feet in aquatic animals.

Essence Statement-

Knows that organisms undergo life processes and have structures that help them survive within their environments.

My ISTE standard-

5.3.a Model and learn with students how to formulate computational solutions to problems and how to give and receive actionable feedback.

5.3.c Plan collaboratively with other educators to create learning activities that cross disciplines to strengthen student understanding of CT and CS concepts and transfer the application of knowledge in new contexts.

I chose these ones for a reason and its because it helps the students learn thier own special way and solve problems on thier own accord, while also having me work with my fellow classmates and coworkers to figure out how to challenge my students.

Idea-

I think digital art would be an amazing category to follow because this TEK can lead to some amazing art pieces being made; instead of a verbal explanation of the functions of animals, a drawing could be used to show a grasshopper's legs or a slug's shell. An art piece can take on its own, multiple hours to finish, so we will have no problem trying to fill up the ten minutes of activity time.

materials-

Microsoft Paint or Medibang or some art app.

Example-

Icreate lab ideas-

-The 3D Printer- we can make different attributes on animals such as a locusts legs or wings on a butterfly

-laser cutter- We can cut out different animals and thier attributes and have the students point out the differences on the critters

The one I'm most interested in using is the 3D printer but I will have to talk to my group before hand to get thier agreement on the idea.

  1. Hey Summer! I love the idea of utilizing Digital Art for this TEK! The kids would LOVE creating little doodles of the animals and their important structures and characteristics! This is also a fun way for the kids to express their creativity and learn at the same time! I am sure you are going to make this project so much fun! Great job my friend! :)

  2. Hey Summer, this idea looks like it would be really fun! For 5th grade, this activity could be very useful to see what the students know. Your TEK works well with this activity because the students can draw a picture of an animal of their choice and describe the structure and function through their art. Great job!
