Metro Elementary

Introduction-

My oh my! Last night we went over to metro elementary and preformed coding activites to the students and can i just say, how much fun this actual assignment was? When we first showed up to the event, me and my partner were extremely confused and lost, we werent sure what exactly we were supposed to be doing, nor exactly sure how it was gonna go. photos are down below of how both activities went-

Drone Activity-

We were told we were gonna do our drones first, so we marched ourselves right into the caferteria and got set up but not long into that process did our students show up. we had three kiddos in our group: Ariel, Julius, and Felix. our group was really a talkitive group, full of energy and all over the place but interested. While jackie was trying to get the drone connected, i kept the children entertained, talking to them about a little bit of everything from coding and drones to thier silly little family stories. Did i need to know about the big dog that barked at them a couple of months ago? No. Did i hear about it? yes.

Once we got our drone to finally connect, we basically let the children play and experiment, trying to add in reasoning behind what they were doing but honestly, our children were just fine figuring it out on thier own. They almost seemed bored after a while once they figured out how to make our flip and do tricks. We tried to get them do other things as well but they just kind of found it boring if they werent able to do it all on thier own.

Lego WeDo 2.0-

Once it was time to switch, we took the kids outside and started to play with our Lego Wedo 2.0 activity. Once again our children were kind of bored with our activity after a few minutes of playing with it but before going into that let me start from the beginning for this activity. our activity was to have the student draw a color strip and code the color strip into our glowing snail, which was meant for kindergarten students. We had second graders so once they were able to do that first strip, they found it so easy that they wanted to do more. We got to the point where we had to create up a game on the fly where jackie thought of a color strip and the boys had to create one and we had to see if they were thinking of the same color pattern. This was more fun to them then the orginial idea which is fine for us because we had to change our game plan to better fit our students.

TEKS-

Orginially, i had other TEKS in mind but now that i did the activity, i decided to change my TEKS-

5.5.b Empower students to select personally meaningful computational projects.

5.5.c Use a variety of instructional approaches to help students frame problems in ways that can be represented as computational steps or algorithms to be performed by a computer.

I chose these TEKS because it went from collaborator orgininally to faccilitator almost immediately because these students were able to explore on thier own and i was there to help them.
